3 Words for 2011: Service. Joy. Embrace.

01 Jan 2011

Why pick just one word for 2011 when, like Chris Brogan, you could have three? What will your words be?

I’ve been kickin’ around my 3 words: Service? Useful? Growth? Learning? Pleasure? Joy? Connection? Explore?

These are the ideas that keep coming up:

1. I want to be useful, of service, engage in ways that make a difference, that help, that inspire, that are valuable. How can I be more valuable to you this year? Please do let me know!

“I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community and as long as I live, it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can. I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work the more I live.” George Bernard Shaw

2. It’s essential to me to celebrate the moments of life as I live them… even more this year than ever before. To savor, to commemorate, to be present and smile. That is where joy comes in.

“Life is not a journey to the grave with intentions of arriving safely in a pretty well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming … WOW! What a ride!”

3. The European Summit 2010 made clear that I am at a place where the level of skills and knowledge I’ve accrued up til now no longer suffice. New teams, knowledge and skills are needed. It’s like standing on the edge of Columbus’s map, ready to go further, out where there be dragons. That’s how it seemed last year, anyway. Like I was standing on the top of a ski run far, far too steep to be safe for me and my eyes were huge and sometimes brimming with giant tears. Now I feel like Jean Luc Picard at the helm of the Starship Enterprise. It’s time to assemble a first-rate crew and boldly go into the beyond. This is a time of growth, discovery and exploration. It’s time to embrace the unknown. There a song for this, too: Deb Talan‘s Big Strong Girl. Check it out!

So the words for 2011 are:

Service. Joy. Embrace.

The soundtrack for these words is the Black Eyed Peas, I’ve Got a Feelin’. FUN!

Love your words. Love your goals. Mine for this year is pretty simple, less crazy…

In response to your question, “How can I be more valuable to you this year?” …I’m glad that you asked.

What about making it more about me (your reader, not just me specifically)? What about showing how do we could become expat adventurers? The preparation needed, etc. A little DIY expat if you will.

And if that is too much, how about ways we can incorporate some travel adventures into our lives without becoming expats (yet!)

Thanks for asking! Have an amazing 2011 wherever you are to enjoy it!

Thanks, Karen! This is exactly what I needed to know. XpatAdventures started as a personal blog — just me & about 5 girlfriends keeping in touch when we all moved away from Boulder, CO nearly 7 years ago. Now it’s something totally different and has lots of potential… so this year I am turning it into something like what you described: a treasure trove of possibility, entertainment, etc.
THANKS! Stay tuned… it’s going to take a while…

I love these words, the quotes, and your thoughts on what they mean for you. You are an extraordinarily inspiring soul, and I am so grateful for our connection. Cheers to YOU.

Awesome, Rebecca. I’m with you and sending love for all of it. My word(s)? Wild Abandon. Unrestrained freedom. I’m happy to stir some of that into your pot, too. We are all so much better together–may this be a year of connection and change.

Hi, Lisa! Ooooooohhh… we could all get into some fun trouble with Wild Abandon as words! WOW! Love it!
I think I’ll think up some daily practices for that one! 😉 Thanks for visiting!

Swirly led the way here today…and she hit the nail on the head when she said this post was great.

I love your choice of words. Service is my favourite, because it works twofold. Helping others works to help ourselves too, what feels greater than helping? Not much. NOOOOTTT much.

Fun is it, the video is perfect, and I’ll see you your JOY and raise you an EMBRACE.

Boldly into ’11 we trod onwards! Whoooot!

Aw, shucks! Thanks!
And thanks for sending folks my way.
Am in the midst of giant overhaul of the site… wish we all had time to sit and chat about such things… A gang of you fab ladies should all come visit. We could get a villa in Italy or something. Ciao bella!

I’m in for the villa, anytime! I miss you, and all the lovely souls from our travels. Since I read this post a few days ago I’ve been thinking about what my words should be. I used them in my last blog post: determined, willing and hopeful. Things I haven’t been enough of, ever. I’m not ready for service but I am glad that you are.
