Things I Plan to Eat in New York City

01 Aug 2010

Since my last trip to the States, weeks ago now, I’ve never really gotten back on local time; every night I’m accidentally awake later and later and later. In the wee, cool, dark hours of the morning, what is an XpatAdventurer to do but research her next trip?

Last night I set about finding out what the Internet recommends I eat in New York City (I leave Wednesday). It started with cake (I long for American cake.); here’s the list of undisputed champs the Internet shared with me:

Undisputed best sandwich in New York City? This was a hands-down favorite. Pastrami w/mustard and a sour pickle at Katz’ Deli. They have a crazy Web site.

For Lox on a Bagel? The Internet seems to agree that Russ & Daughters is the place for Lox… but seems conflicted about the bagels they put it on. Ess-a-Bagel was mentioned a lot, too, and is closer to my midtown hotel.

hensAnd for the cake I went in search of? The Internet seems to think Cupcake Cafe will do in a pinch, but the place to go for the best (affordable) chocolate cake is 2 Little Red Hens on the Upper East Side. They have a cake there filled with chocolate pudding, which is just a darned good idea. (The photo is by Lara Ruth, who writes Grits in the City. Check it out!)

Promise me that you’ll also (if you have time) head to Baked Bakery in Brooklyn for their salted caramel cake! Mmmmmmmm…cake.

Hi sweetie! Will look it up now on MapQuest. This may be my “No Cake Left Behind” tour of NYC. I MISS YOU! When does that baby come?

So when are you coming to LA?

Swirly Girly – Thank you for your sweet email – will answer tomorrow with documents. When’s the best time to visit CA, ladies? How about December?

Let them eat cake. MWAHAHAHAHA!

UPDATE: Banana Pudding from Magnolia Bakery was better in my opinion than their flourless chocolate cake. 2 Little Red Hens was fantastic — a cute little spot on the Upper East Side. Red Velvet was even better than the Brooklyn Blackout chocolate cake filled with chocolate pudding, topped with chocolate frosting. The cream cheese frosting on the Red Velvet was the best I’ve ever had. YUM!

The best meal was actually from a street cart, the Halal cart at 53rd & 6th Ave. (and that’s saying something because I ate at a couple nice restaurants)!

@Sarah, I never got to Brooklyn
