You know your date has good taste when…

I’ve stayed close friends with 2 people from my childhood, and one of them is now becoming sort-of famous. Well, he’s famous, I think, actually… but to me he’s just HIM, you know, like how he was when he was 13. When we talk about his rise to stardom it makes us laugh… like, “And then I got invited to xxxxxx.”  “YOU DID NOT!”  “Yep. And they paid me.”  HAHAHAHA. This makes us laugh out loud. (Here he’s referred to as a Guru. Ha!)

You may not have heard of him yet; he’s famous in a particular niche I know almost nothing about, except that I like it: wine.

So Antonio Galloni is one of my best, best, best friends in the whole world. Sometimes we go a long time without talking, then all the sudden we’re in one of those old friend conversations where we’re silly and laughing like you can only do with someone who knows you really well or someone who knew you when you listened to AC/DC (forgive me, there is no lightning bolt in the special symbols font). We fall into both categories, and we crack ourselves up.

AntonioSo one night I was getting ready for a date. With an Italian. And I’m on the phone laughing with Antonio Galloni, Good God of Wine, so he says (of course he does), “What are you drinking (later tonight, with the simmering bolognese)?”

I was not about to tell him about the 9 franc bottle of Barolo I got at the grocery store. Instead I ran up the stairs to tell him about the bottle said date brought a couple nights earlier. I told him, “I dunno what it is, but I think it’s good…”

When I got to the kitchen, I read in a bad French accent: “1995 Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande Grand Cru Pauillac.” WHATEVER THAT MEANS.

Antonio’s reaction?

Silence.

I’m thinkin’ that’s good. He would have laughed out loud at me otherwise.

Then he says, (and this is the friend who told me, “Your palate is unsophisticated.”)

Really?” (as if I of the unsophisticated palate could make that name up…)

“Mmm hmm.”

“I’m impressed.”

and later, though the subject of conversation had moved on…

“I’m really impressed.”

Date wins Antonio Galloni, Old Friend & Good God of Wine’s, stamp of approval. 90+ points for sure.

** Also, fyi, I cleared writing about him with him first. Some people worry about these things…

  1. Fabulous Post!
Here’s hoping Antonio will be able to help me intro wonderful old friend to Tuscan wines! Very excited for him to be following his passion! And Dad and I stayed in Pauillac and yes, fine wine!
